The Peplum Challenge

Week three of Refashion Runway challenged us to make something with a peplum.  I have to admit that I haven't been all that enthusiastic about peplums, but a challenge is a challenge!  As I was looking through the possibilities that I had in my stash, I figured this would be the perfect time to use some of the vintage lace I salvaged from a petticoat.  And, lucky me, I had a denim shirt in my stash that already fit pretty good.  So, if you're interested in the details, there are lots of pictures to follow!

This is what I started with—a pile of lace, a men's shirt, and a women's blouse.

And here's how it was done....

Use the pattern of the front and back bodice to cut your lining from the men's shirt.

Sew the shoulder and side seams of the lining.  Press seams open.  Place the same size darts in the front and back as you did with the denim.

I had a wide, flat piece of lace I wanted to use for the collar.  But it needed a little help (darts) in order to have it work.

Fold cuffs cut from lining, right sides together, and stitch side seams.  Press seams open.

Enjoy your new jacket with lace peplum and lining.

Wear it belted...

..or open for a casual look.

  1. I love it. Great idea using the pocket on the plaid shirt as an inside pocket for the jacket!

    1. Thanks for your very thoughtful comment, its always nice to hear how others view your work. I think all of us, no matter how experienced, enjoy seeing how something is made. I think seeing the process also helps to appreciate the effort that went into a project. The whole group of ladies worked hard and did an awesome job! BTW, the photo shoot took place at an historic train depot near my house. And, we fortunately had a short break from the Oregon rain!

  4. The photo shoot location was amazing and I don't know why you ever hesitated to wear a peplum top. It looks so cute on you. Thanks for the great tutorial. If I lose my last 10 lbs I will attempt one for myself. I may just have the perfect vintage lace. Such a fun idea for the peplum challenge. I'm going to go vote right now. I hope you win because I love seeing your fabulous designs and learning from your detailed tutorials! Keep up the great work!

    1. Thanks! I probably could have just used a facing around the edges, but I thought it would be nice line it. Plus, I really liked the plaid with the denim.

  14. I love what you have been doing lately. You do such great refashions. I also really like that you have been showing how you achieve the results. I would often not bother to read many of your earlier posts as it just showed the results and didn't explain or show any of the process. Thanks for taking the extra time to show the process and further inspire others to have a go.

  16. WoW....I was out of town so I'm just seeing this challenge item; it sure turned out cute. Guess I will have to look and see what I have to make one with. I'm not really into peplums either, but, you do make it very appealing. I have lots of lace that I would love to use... now you've got me to thinking.
