Refashion Runway: The Metallic Challenge

Last week's velvet challenge was a lot of fun and a big thanks to everyone who voted!

This week's challenge for Refashion Runway is Metallic.  I really didn't want to make something that was too formal, which seemed to be the natural thing to do with metallic fabric.  I opted, instead, for a more casual look with metallic accents.  I started with a fleece-lined jacket, shower curtain hooks, a sequined t-shirt, and a studded blouse.

These are the steps I took to achieve the final outfit....

Even though my cut lines went into the sleeve a little bit (I wanted to keep the skirt as full as possible), the finished result is fine.  By the time the skirt is gathered and belted, you really don't notice the small sleeve seams.

I then stitched up the side seams.

Once the elastic was in place, I closed up the seam.  Now for the jacket!

When I cut away the front bands from the shirt, I allowed not only a seam allowance, but an extra width of fabric so that the band could roll over the front edge of the jacket and give it a nicer finish.
(See one of the following photos.)

The collar stand was not opened during this step, which would have allowed the raw edge of the jacket to be captured in between.  Instead, I kept both layers together and stitched through both of them onto the jacket.  The raw edge of the jacket on the underneath side would be covered by turning the collar to the back of the jacket and hand stitching in place.

I removed the hooks from the back of the shower curtain hooks by basically snapping them off.  I used a grinder in the wood shop to smooth the jagged edges that were left behind.

I was fortunate that the shower hooks had so many holes in the design.  I simply threaded leather cording through the holes and brass beads, then tied a square knot in the back.  A piece of gold chain was attached using the same method.

Again, this was a fun challenge!  Be sure to visit The Renegade Seamstress to see all of
the creativity and vote for your favorite!

    1. Thanks for noticing, and appreciating, the modesty. It can be a bit more of a challenge when you are trying to add sleeves, or keep the length modest...but it can be done! Take care!

  5. I love the jacket so much! I would have struggled to see the potential in it, in it's fleece form! Beautiful work, and love the photos too... and I've got serious hair envy, haha! :)

    1. Thanks Gema! I love your metallic outfit and you look stunning in it! And, just so you don't have hair envy, it's usually pulled up in a ponytail or hair clip most days...pretty boring! Good luck!
