A Blast From The Past!

This summer our family took a trip to Southern California to visit our daughter and her sweet family. Six of my grandchildren live there and I miss them so!  When I was packing for the trip, I came across the scooter skirt I made in seventh grade Home Ec. class.  Yes, I lived through the scooter skirt craze!  I guess now you would call them skorts.  Do people still use that phrase?  In fact, while shopping at a thrift store a while back, I found a copy of the original pattern I had used so many years ago.  I had to pick it up for old time's sake!

I packed the skirt in the hopes that it would fit my granddaughter, even though she is younger than I was when I made it.  I thought, "How fun would it be to get pictures of my sweet little granddaughter in a skirt I made so many years ago?"

Well, I have to say that it did fit, and she LOVED it!  She was so excited to wear it and participate in a photoshoot.  I tell you, that girl loves to pose!  When I told her that Grandma had made the skirt over 45 years ago, her response was..."It's amazing it's still standing!"

This was quite the labor intensive scooter skirt when I was in seventh grade...waistband, top stitched pockets, front and back flaps, zipper, button and buttonhole, hook and eyes.  As a side note, those last few things were a little foreign to a seven-year old that's used to elastic waistbands, or skirts that aren't shorts also.  It was quite a fiasco when it came time to use the bathroom... "Mom, how do I get this thing off me?!"

  1. Darling...my daughter has a dress or two that her great-grandmother made for her grandmother (my mother) over 60 years ago. She loves them!

    1. That's wonderful! And, as my granddaughter would say, "It's amazing they're still standing!"

  2. I made my first skirt in 7th grade at about the same time. Instead of cherries, mine had apples on it but it is LOOOONG gone. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  3. Love this! Is your granddaughter going to wear it? I made 2 things on 8th grade Home Ec - an apron and then thought I could go from that directly to a jersey knit dress. Haha! That is when I developed a fear of sewing knits.

    1. Thanks! My granddaughter wore it out to dinner that night. She loves it and I think she will wear it if she can figure out a way to easily get out of it for trips to the bathroom! And, I agree, taking on a jersey knit in the 8th grade would scar anyone for life!!

  4. If "it's still standing," you might as well tweak the waistband with elastic and/or snaps so she will get maximum wear out of it!

    1. Great idea! I should have done that before I left it with her, but there was no time. Maybe my daughter can tweak it for her.
